If we had a dollar for every time a new Mum or Dad walked into our Eaglemont studio and whispered, “I’m so worried they’re going to settle for these photos,” we could retire!

It is completely normal to worry that your baby will be the one who doesn’t sleep, or the one who screams through their session. But here is the good news: We are a team of Paediatric Nurses and Photographers.

While we aren’t working as nurses during your session (we won’t be giving vaccinations or doing medical check-ups!), we bring years of clinical observation and experience into the studio. We don’t just see a crying baby; we see cues, reflexes, and needs.

Here is how our background ensures your session is calm, safe, and successful—even if your little one is having a “grumpy” day.

The “Nurse Filter”: We Read Your Baby’s Cues

Because of our medical training, we interpret a baby’s behaviour differently than a standard photographer might. We can quickly distinguish between:

  • Hunger cues: Rooting, sucking on hands, or specific cry pitches.
  • Comfort needs: Wind, gas pain, or needing a position change.
  • Overstimulation: When they just need a break from being touched.
  • Annoyance: Sometimes, they just get mad that we moved their arm when they were comfortable! We are used to being yelled at so this is fine 😉

We respect these cues instantly. If a baby is annoyed, we stop. If they are in pain, we use clinical soothing techniques. If they need a cuddle, they get a cuddle. We never force a pose on a distressed baby.

The Great “Dummy” Debate: Why We Love Them

We know many parents are hesitant about dummies. You might be worried about nipple confusion if you are breastfeeding, or you might fear creating a bad habit. From our perspective, the sucking reflex is the most powerful soothing tool a newborn has. Using a dummy for the short duration of a photoshoot:

Does not create an addiction.
Does not undo your breastfeeding progress.
Does help lower the baby’s heart rate and settle them into those curly, womb-like poses safely.

Even if your baby doesn’t take one at home, allowing us to use one strictly for the session can be the difference between a restless hour and a deeply sleeping baby.

You don’t have to use it again once you leave our doors!

Feeding Strategy: Top-Ups on the Beanbag

Hungry babies don’t pose. It is that simple.

We always encourage parents that if they are using any bottles to bring extra expressed milk or formula. This allows us to give small “top-ups” right there on the posing beanbag without having to unwrap them, pick them up, and disturb their temperature regulation.

This keeps their tummy full and keeps them in that lovely “milk-drunk” state, allowing us to capture those sleepy images you love.

When “Nude” Isn’t Working: The Magic of the Wrap

We love those classic nude newborn shots, but the reality is that some babies feel exposed and insecure without clothes. This triggers their startle reflex.

If your baby is unsettled, we don’t fight it. We wrap them.

  • Swaddling mimics the tight compression of the womb.
  • It creates instant security and calm.
  • It prevents them from hitting themselves with flailing arms.

Please know that wrapped photos are just as timeless and beautiful. If your baby dictates that they need to be swaddled to feel safe, we listen to them.

What If They Stay Awake?

Sometimes, a baby simply does not want to miss the action. And that is okay.

We don’t need your baby to be asleep for 100% of the session. As long as they are content, awake photos can be incredible. Capturing that direct eye contact or a curious expression is often a favourite memory for parents.

Whether they are asleep, awake, hungry, or just need a cuddle, our team has the clinical patience to handle it. You just sit back on the couch, have a coffee, and let us look after the rest.
