As a newborn photographer, I have worked with many parents who wonder why their little ones need to sleep during their photography session. And whilst we do love those adorable awake photos, for the most part, a sleepy baby will lead to a more comfortable session for them and you and of course, many more beautiful photos for you to treasure.

First and foremost, newborns tend to be more cooperative when they’re asleep. A newborn photography session can be a lot for a little one to handle, especially if they’re being handled and posed in unfamiliar ways. When a baby is asleep, they’re much more likely to remain calm and relaxed. This will also help us avoid overstimulating them which can lead to Colic in the evenings.

Another reason why a sleeping baby is ideal for a newborn photography session is that it allows me to create those adorable, curled-up poses that parents love. These poses are not only cute, but they also help to showcase the natural flexibility and delicacy of a newborn’s body. However, these poses require a lot of patience and skill on my part, as well as a sleeping baby who is comfortable and relaxed.

When your baby is awake they may look directly into the camera and give us that shot we love with their eyes open….which is amazing! But they won’t all do this and for the most part, awake babies are looking around, crossing their eyes, sticking out their tongue and wriggling around trying to get comfortable. All of which is their gorgeous little nature but not what you wanted to capture in a newborn photography shoot!

So, how can you help your baby sleep during their photography session? Here are a few tips:

  1. Keep your baby warm and comfortable. Babies tend to sleep better when they’re warm and cozy, so make sure to dress them in comfortable, soft clothing and bring plenty of blankets to keep them warm.
  2. Feed your baby before the session. A full tummy can help your baby feel relaxed and content, making it easier for them to fall asleep and stay asleep during the session.
  3. Create a soothing environment. A quiet, peaceful atmosphere can help your baby feel relaxed and comfortable.
  4. Stay calm yourself! Calm parents make calm babies.

Remember, the most important thing is to be patient and flexible. Babies can be unpredictable, and it’s not uncommon for them to wake up and need a break during the session. But with a little patience and a lot of love, we can work together to create beautiful, timeless images that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

My sessions are all baby led so if your baby does wake up, need extra cuddles or feeds during the session that is totally ok! There is no one watching the clock and we have lots of time to keep you baby happy.
