Anyone who has visited my home studio in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, know that I have a huge prop addiction!! From buckets and bowls to put the babies in, to backdrops and outfits and wraps to create individual images for each newborn session that I shoot. Whilst most of my families choose me as their photographer because of my neutral tones, I love being able to offer options of light or dark, patterned or plain, simple or textured.
After establishing my newborn photography business, it took a long time to find vendors that I trusted. I made the mistake of buying cheaper products that didn’t photograph well and were poor quality. However, over the years I have been able to learn from other photographers what whilst beautiful props and accessories aren’t cheap, they are well worth it if you want to create beautiful portraits for your family.
I am hoping that this post will stop you from making mistakes that I did when I was starting out, and realise that spending more money will give you beautiful quality items that will last in your business for a long time to come.
I have a lot of tie backs from Princess and the Pea but after a recent sale I went a little crazy on wraps….and I wasn’t disappointed! They are the perfect amount of stretch and quality to ensure they photograph beautifully. This vendor comes highly recommended – princessandthepeaprops.com.au
Kim makes the most amazing curly felt layers! I now own four and use them every session. They are so thick and luxurious that purchasing your felts from Kim at The Little Vintage Prop Shop is a purchase you will never regret – thelittlevintagefoxpropshop.bigcartel.com
I was lucky enough to discover Kate at The Baby Summit last year and I haven’t looked back. I don’t think I have purchased backdrops elsewhere! They are the perfect size and thickness for any backdrop and come in a million different colours and textures. Be prepared to move quickly during their sales, they fly off the shelves…and for a very good reason – alittlelife.myshopify.com
When it comes to buckets, bowls, nests or anything else you can think of to put a baby in, Drops and Props is the place to go. It can get quite expensive with shipping but you will never be disappointed when your items arrive. Jaime is delightful to deal with and is always looking for new ways to photograph babies and provide us photographers with beautiful props! – dropsandprops.com.au
These guys are THE place to go to if you are looking for backdrops!! Ali has an incredible collection that includes hundreds of designs and being a portrait photographer herself, Ali knows that we need quality products without the unreasonable price tag! These backdrops are easy to clean and I don’t think I could ever have enough of their original designs as well as their imported backdrops from the USA – divinemissrubydesigns.com
