Preparing for a newborn photography session can be an exciting and unforgettable experience for new parents, but it can also be very daunting. Often it is the first time parents are leaving the house with their baby and the idea of getting everyone ready to be someone on time can become A LOT!.

So here are some tips that I have put together for you to help try and make getting out of the house as easy as possible. And remember once you are here, I will take care of everything so you can relax and enjoy the experience!

Make Up

Take Care of Yourself

While your baby will be the star of the show during the photography session, it’s important for parents to take care of themselves as well so that you feel good in your own photos.

Consider doing your hair and makeup when you arrive at the studio whilst your baby is having their photographs done first.

This can help you feel more relaxed in the morning, which in turn can help your baby feel more calm and at ease. You can also get changed at the studio so you aren’t worried about clothes getting dirty before your photos! Also remember to remove chipped nail polish and book Dad in for that haircut if he needs it.

Dress Comfortably

It’s also important to dress comfortably for the session. Choose clothing that’s comfortable and easy to move around in and feed in.  It’s also important to note  that the studio will be warm to keep your baby comfortable, so consider this when getting dressed.

Wearing layers is always a good idea, so you can add or remove clothing as needed. You can then get changed easily before your photos are taken.

Communicate with Your Photographer

Before the session, take the time to communicate with your photographer about any specific ideas or requests you have for the photos. This can help ensure that everyone is on the same page and that you’re able to capture the images you want. I love it when clients bring me photos of images they love so we can try and capture them first.

Additionally, be sure to let your photographer know if there are any poses or positions that make you or your baby uncomfortable. A professional photographer will be experienced in working with newborns and will know how to make you feel comfortable and safe during the session.

Bring Props and Accessories

If you have any special props or accessories you’d like to incorporate into the photos, be sure to bring them along to the session.

This could include anything from a favorite blanket or stuffed animal to a family heirloom or sentimental item.

Discuss these ideas with your photographer in advance so they can incorporate them into the session seamlessly.

Prepare Your Baby

The session itself normally lasts around 2 hours, a bit more if your baby is unsettled. To prevent that from happening, you can take a few steps to help your baby feel calm and relaxed during the session. Make sure your baby has a big feed prior to the session, so they’re well-fed and sleepy when you arrive. If you’re bottle-feeding, bring along a couple of spare bottles.

Dress your baby in something easy to remove, in case they’re sleeping when you arrive. If you have a car seat that’s removable, you can bring your baby in if they’re already asleep.

And finally, if you have a dummy, please bring it with you (even if they don’t take one yet). Sometimes if they’re a little more restless in poses, it can help to settle them in a few minutes.

So now it is over to you! Preparing for a newborn photography session involves more than just getting your baby ready – parents can take steps to prepare themselves as well. Taking care of yourself, dressing comfortably, communicating with your photographer, and bringing props and accessories can all contribute to a smooth and enjoyable session.

I always tell parents the hardest part of the day should be getting out of the house so if you can do that part, I will take care of the rest!

Can’t wait to have you in the studio!
